News: Construction Works For MRT3 Project To Resume In H2 2021

Apr 5, 2021

After being suspended by the previous government, construction works for Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3) is now set to begin in the second half of 2021 (H2 2021).

With this, Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has been given three months to update the studies previously conducted on the project’s implementation, reported Bernama.

“In the recent cabinet meeting, the government agreed to go ahead with the MRT3 Circle Line and MRT Corp was given three months to update the studies which include the cost of this project,” said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He made the statement after inspecting the operational availability of Putrajaya MRT Line’s first phase from the Sri Damansara Sentral MRT Station to the Kampung Batu MRT Station, Kuala Lumpur.

Wee shared that the project’s cost will be decided based on the studies done by MRT Corp.

In 2018, Anthony Loke Siew Fook, who was the Transport Minister then, said MRT3’s implementation had been deferred to lessen the burden of government debt.

Meanwhile, Wee said construction progress for the Putrajaya MRT Line project had already hit 97% and is slated to begin operations in August 2021.

He noted that the remaining 3% only involves testing and commissioning of electrical and mechanical systems as well as trial operations.

On the other hand, the second phase of the MRT line project from Kampung Batu to Putrajaya had already achieved an overall progress of 87%. It is expected to begin operations in January 2023, said Wee.

The Putrajaya line has a total construction cost of RM30.53 billion.
